Step Up to Writing and 6+1 Traits of Writing

Step Up to Writing and 6+1 Traits of Writing are both used to instruct K-8 students in writing. The two programs complement each other and are utilized depending on learner and classroom needs. Step Up to Writing is a flexible, strategy-based program that connects reading and writing to build a common language of literacy and increase proficiency across grade levels and content areas. Step Up to Writing’s hands-on approach teaches how to write and engages students in the writing process, providing practice with expository and narrative writing. Extensive modeling, guided practice, and independent practice improve writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary, note-taking, and critical-thinking skills. To build on this, 6+1 Traits of Writing pinpoints student strengths and weaknesses in ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. From there, lessons are planned and instruction is carried out to address the needs of all learners.

Shurley Grammar and Warriner’s Handbook

Shurley Grammar is used in 1st–5th grades. It integrates proven methods of instruction and is used as a supplemental curriculum to the writing program. It tailors instruction to the specific needs of students, helping them to gain a clear understanding of grammar and sentence composition. The program features consistent practice, repetition, and application of grammar through the use of Jingles and Question-and-Answer Flow. Jingles help students learn the definitions for the eight parts of speech, which helps them learn the vocabulary necessary for understanding basic sentence structure. The Question and Answer Flow is a way to analyze the role of each word in a sentence. Learning to identify and label the parts of a sentence leads to understanding sentence structure, ultimately helping students to write better sentences, paragraphs, and essays.

Warriner’s Handbook is used in 6th-8th grades. It reviews grammar, usage, and mechanics and also serves as a reference guide for students as they compose writing pieces. The handbook features oral practice, writing applications, tips & tricks, challenge exercises, style tips, and pointers to help students understand writing rules or concepts.
