Mrs. Cox

Mrs. Cox's Classroom

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a woderful break. Thank you so very much for all the gifts and treats you blessed me with. It meant the world to be in your thoughts during this busy holiday season. That you took the time to remember me was very special. Thank you!

Thank you also to all the parents who helped make our party a success. We had a blast!

  • If anyone has any markers they no longer use or want, please send them in! We'd love some in our classroom. All I have are a few left by last year's teacher.
  • If you happen to have any extra pillows or bean bag type chairs that you no longer use, I'd love your cast-offs.
  • If you have any plastic shoe boxes that you no longer need, I'd love those too.
  • Please make sure your child has a CHAPTER BOOK to read at school.
  • If your child is done reading a book and wants to get rid of it, feel free to donate it to our class library!

Specials (We go in order that spells "CAMP")

Tuesdays - Library

Fridays -  Social Skills and Latin rotation

Check your student's reading teacher's website for info.

Cox reading class-  This week we will begin reading Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. This book is filled with satire so we will begin by learning about what that is and where it can be found in pop culture (as in the movie Shrek for example).

Culminating projects on the book King Arthur are due Jan 22.

We are working on the compare and contrast book recommendation essay which will be due on Thursday this week. Students must hire an editor. So, they need to find someone to edit their sloppy copy which I'd prefer typed double spaced or written out by skipping lines. Then they need to "pay" this editor somehow.  For ex, If they hire Mom as an editor, they need to do something to help her out as payment. Final copy should also be typed double spaced or written out skipping lines.

See your child's math teacher's website for info on math.

Cox math class - We will be reviewing this week as well as applying fractions to real world situations. The fraction test will be on Friday this week.

Here's a super helpful reference site covering topics we will be studying:

PRACTICE MATH FACTS!!!! I am seeing that many students don't know their math facts. Please take some time on a regular basis to practice. There are gobs of sites out there to facilitate this, but my favorite is simply to use flash cards. Another great resource I've discovered is the car. When I'm in the car, I sometimes test my kids on math facts. I know if I did this more often, they would benefit. Maybe challenge yourself as a parent to do this once a day? Simply ask, "What's 7x3, 4x8.....etc." Do addition and subtraction as well. Each student has a calendar and is required to practice 5-10 min 5 times a week. I will be collecting the calendars, signed by a parent, for an easy participation grade once a month.

Spelling has been moved into our Language Arts grade category. As a homeroom class, we will review with a game called "Sparkle", and take the test on Fri.

We are on week 16.

Here's a link for Spelling City in order to practice spelling words: Spelling City

***Reasearch has shown that practicing spelling words ORALLY is the best practice.  This leads to optimal memory retention which transfers into an increase in of spelling words correctly in everyday writing.***

We are learning about inverted sentences this week. I also started supplimenting Shurley Grammar lessons with some from Easy Grammar to help solidify the pieces of the puzzle of the English language.
