Week of April 16, 2018

Weekly News:

State testsing is this week. We will be taking the social studies test on Thursday. Be sure your child has a good book to read!

Friday is a teacher work day; there are no students that day. We all have Monday off as well. Enjoy!

Regular Announcements:

  • If anyone has any markers they no longer use or want, please send them in! We'd love some in our classroom. All I have are a few left by last year's teacher.
  • If you happen to have any extra pillows or bean bag type chairs that you no longer use, I'd love your cast-offs.
  • If you have any plastic shoe boxes that you no longer need, I'd love those too.
  • Please make sure your child has a CHAPTER BOOK to read at school.
  • If your child is done reading a book and wants to get rid of it, feel free to donate it to our class library!

Specials (We go in order that spells "CAMP")

Wednesdays - Library

Fridays -  Social Skills and Latin rotation

Check your student's reading teacher's website for info.

Cox reading class- We are continuing through the novel Treasure Island with some literature analysis, large group, and small group discussions. Last week we began brainstorming about our adventure stories. This week we will continue to formulate and begin writing them.

See your child's math teacher's website for info on math.

Cox math class - We are going to sing about perimeter and area! I made up some songs to help us remember the definitions and formulas. We will also be practicing these skills in our daily work.

NOTE: You can access student textbooks and workbooks on-line to see what we are doing or to print out homework. The directions and account info are stapled to the back of your child's planner.

PRACTICE MATH FACTS!!!! I am seeing that many students don't know their math facts. Please take some time on a regular basis to practice. There are gobs of sites out there to facilitate this, but my favorite is simply to use flash cards. Another great resource I've discovered is the car. When I'm in the car, I sometimes test my kids on math facts. I know if I did this more often, they would benefit. Maybe challenge yourself as a parent to do this once a day? Simply ask, "What's 7x3, 4x8.....etc." Do addition and subtraction as well.

Spelling has been moved into our Language Arts grade category. As a homeroom class, we will review with a game called "Sparkle", and take the test on Fri.

We are on week 27.

Here's a link for Spelling City in order to practice spelling words: Spelling City

***Reasearch has shown that practicing spelling words ORALLY is the best practice.  This leads to optimal memory retention which transfers into an increase in of spelling words correctly in everyday writing.***

We are continuing to progress through the three sentence patterns we've learned this year, practice jingles, and identify all parts of speech.
