Reading

This week we will continue our novel study of The Secret Garden. We will be reading chapters 22-25 of the book.

Last week, the students received a Project Choice Board for The Secret Garden. This is our culminating activity for this unit and should be a fun/creative way for students to interpret and reflect on the novel. This project will be due January 31st. We will be having an in-class work day on Friday, January 26.

Math:

This week we will be continuing our chapter 6, "Area" unit. We will learn how to find the base and height of triangles as well as finding the area of triangles.

Parents, please note that your child now has important log-in information for Singapore Math in Focus Online Resources stapled into the front of his/her planner (a bright pink paper).  You are welcome to access these tools anytime from home.  We think they will prove useful throughout the year.

Singapore Math in Focus sets the mastery level at 80% for all assessments. On the assessments, students will see what the curriculum calls “novel questions.” These questions take the concepts that the students have learned in class and presents them in a new and unique way. This is to encourage higher-order thinking and problem solving skills. If a student scores an 80% on an assessment, they have fully mastered the unit and have met the expectations.

Science

This week we will continue our exciting unit on Chemistry! Students will learn about the Periodic Table and how it is organized. We will talk about the difference between metals, non-metals, and metalloids.

Language Arts

This week we will continue with our large expository writing unit. During this unit the students will be researching a state of their choice and writing a five paragraph essay. The process is guided and most of the wriitng will be in school if time is spent wisely. Students will be writing their essay outline, topic and conclusion sentences, and their paragraph 2 outline this week. The expectation page for this paper is linked here

In Grammar, we are beginning chapter 10 which students will work through both pattern 1 and pattern 2 sentences.
